Free Solar Feasibility Check

Free

A simple first step for homeowners who want to know whether their property appears worth investigating further.

Using the Find My House tool, you identify your property and the roof you want assessed. I then carry out an initial desktop check using the information available.

What it includes

  • A basic review of the property and roof
  • An initial view on whether solar appears potentially feasible
  • Identification of obvious limitations visible at this stage
  • Guidance on whether a more detailed survey appears worthwhile
The free check is deliberately limited. It is not a solar system design, quotation or full technical survey. It does not include detailed measurements, electrical inspection, battery sizing, inverter selection, financial modelling or a written system specification.

There is no obligation to proceed further.

Instead of allowing each installer to decide independently what they want to sell you, I assess the property and household first.

The objective is to establish what your home actually needs, then give you a clear design brief that can be used when obtaining quotations.

The survey can include

  • Property and roof assessment
  • Roof measurements and usable installation area
  • Orientation, pitch and shading considerations
  • Roof access and condition observations
  • Electrical supply and meter information
  • Likely cable routes and equipment locations
  • Household electricity consumption
  • Existing or planned EV charging
  • Heat pumps and other significant electrical loads
  • Appropriate solar array size
  • Battery storage requirements
  • Inverter requirements
  • Important installation constraints
  • Photographic survey evidence
  • Recommended system specification

You receive an independent record of the survey and a design brief that can be used when approaching installers.

That makes it much easier to compare quotations like-for-like, rather than trying to compare completely different systems.

Pricing and travel: a standard residential survey starts at £295. Where significant additional travel is required, a travel supplement may apply. Provide the property postcode first and I will confirm the total fixed price before you make any payment.

Fully Managed Solar Buying Service

For homeowners who would rather have independent help through the whole buying process.

This includes the full survey and design work, followed by assistance obtaining and assessing suitable installer quotations.

Rather than sending you away with a report and leaving you to make sense of everything yourself, I stay involved while the proposals come in.

The service can include

  • Preparation of the system requirements
  • Identifying suitable installers to approach
  • Requesting comparable quotations
  • Reviewing proposed equipment
  • Comparing system designs and specifications
  • Comparing warranties and protections

Why pay for a survey?

Why isn't the detailed survey free?

Installer surveys are often free because the installer hopes to win the installation contract afterwards.

Tom Solar works differently.

You are paying for independent time spent assessing the property, considering the household's requirements and establishing what appears appropriate before an installer is chosen.

That means the starting point is your home and your requirements, rather than a particular manufacturer's equipment or an installer's preferred package.

Distance and survey capacity

Travel pricing

I cover a wide area, but travelling several hours to a property can consume a substantial part of a working day.

Rather than hiding that cost inside everyone's survey price, longer-distance work may carry a travel supplement.

Enter your postcode when enquiring and I will confirm the full price in advance.

You will always know the total before deciding whether to proceed.

Simple payment

How payment works

There is currently no need to enter card details on the Tom Solar website.

Once the service, property and final price have been confirmed, I send you a secure payment link.

You can pay from your phone or computer and I receive confirmation when the payment has completed.

Simple, secure and no unexpected charges.

Tom Solar is operated by Tom Kinnaird. Payment confirmations or receipts may therefore show the name Tom Kinnaird and/or the payment provider used to process the transaction.

Installer introductions

Your details are not simply passed around.

Some homeowners decide that they do not need an independent survey and would prefer to speak directly with installers offering free, no-obligation quotations.

Where appropriate, Tom Solar may offer to introduce you to suitable installers.

Your contact details will not be passed to an installer simply because you used the free feasibility check.

If an introduction is offered, you choose whether you want it to happen.

Where Tom Solar receives an introduction or referral fee, that will be made clear.
